Is Bill Cowher a traitor? E-mail

It's been said before, but we're big time fans of other sports teams besides the Steelers...the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins and the Penn State Nittany Lions.

So right now, we're sporting some disgusting playoff beards and are in full NHL mode.

Interestingly enough, old friend of the Steelers' Bill Cowher has turned into a figure of contreversey in the Eastern Conference Finals of the NHL.

In case you've been living under a rock, Cowher routinely mans the "warning siren" for the Hurricanes home rink in Raleigh.

Penguins fans aren't too happy and our friends at tPB are in full "jobbing" mode.

But is Bill Cowher really a turncoat? Find out after the jump.

I wrote a rant a little while back calling out Steeler Nation for people having loyalties outside of Western Pennsylvania. In case you didn't catch it, the main point was that Pittsburgh isn't always perfect for everybody, a simple point that yinzers seem to overlook when the expect every player to sign for 1/4 of their worth to wear some form of the black and gold.

But where does a former coach who grew up a yinzer fit into the picture?

Before Steelers and Penguins fans are ready to throw Cowher over the Smithfield Bridge, let's think about a few things.

1. Bill Cowher was a football coach. Yes, another obvious fact that people seem to be missing. Another annoying trait of yinzers is that they (err...we) automatically expect each athlete of the local teams to become an impassioned supporter of every other team in the area. Evgeni Malkin at a Pirates game? Breathtaking! John Russell in Mellon Arena? Remarkable! This goes along with the "belief" that everybody secretly loves Pittsburgh and is just waiting for the right time to reveal it.

If Cowher is sounding a siren for the Cleveland Browns or the Baltimore Ravens, this might be something worth getting worked up about. But he had nothing to do with hockey in Pittsburgh while he was here and his job was not to be a Pittsburgh Penguins fan.

2. Bill Cowher was a fine coach and a fine representative of the city. The AFC Championship loses sucked balls, let's just throw the obvious out there. Cowher's legacy will always be coming one game short in my eyes, but a dozen or so divison titles is a whole lot better than many coaches ever accomplish. Cowher's playoff strategy was far from flawless, but don't forget that he was stuck working with Neil O'Donnell and Kordell Stewart most of his tenure as coach...two guys who aren't exactly known as being "clutch." Once Roethlisberger showed up, it only took Cowher two years to win the big game. Oh, and a few of those big playoff losses were to a Patriots team that was very, very good, as much as we'd all like to forget

Cowher's worth ethic, background, and protruding jawline also made him the "face" of Pittsburgh during his time as head coach. He rarely did anything stupid or embarrassing and was a guy that Steeler Nation related to and felt confidence in as a leader.

3. One turn of a siren does not undo 15 seasons of great service. Truth be known, I could care less who Bill Cowher roots for now and where he chooses to live. If he was still a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization maybe this would matter, but he's gone. While he was in town, the Steelers won 161 games, 2 AFC Championships, and a coveted 5th Super Bowl ring. He was a fierce competitor and was everything the Rooney's envisioned him to be when he was a young defensive coordinator in Kansas City.

Bill Cowher came to Pittsburgh to win a championship and he did that. As diehard Pittsburgh fans, that's all we should really care about. This is where us as fans need to draw a line.

Dan Rooney supported Barack Obama, so McCain fans should start buying Joe Flacco jerseys?
Nate McLouth is a Red Wings fan, maybe Buccos fans should pelt him with garbage during the SCF?

Athletes, coaches, and sports managers who live and work in Pittsburgh have lives and passions that exist beyond Allegheny County...yes, even ones who grew up here.

So it will hurt a little bit...or a lot...to see our former coach cheering for the Hurricanes tonight. But anybody who thinks this ruins his legacy or makes him a traitor should be out on the golf course making up conspiracy theories with Capitals and Flyers fans. The only coach that Steelers fans need to worry about is Mike Tomlin and if Penguins fans are worked up over Bill Freakin' Cowher when they are a game away from heading to the SCF, then God help us all indeed.

Go Steelers.

Go Pens.

Long live Bill Cowher.

I think what he did was disrespectful to the sports fans of Pittsburgh. Having grown up in Pittsburgh, Bill knows how seriously we take our sports. Why risk your legendary reputation in Pittsburgh and crank a stupid horn before a game your "hometown" city is playing in? Maybe it is meaningless because he was a football coach and has nothing to do officially with the NHL or hockey in general, but this is the Burgh. It's every Pittsburgher's right to hate whomever they want, for whatever they desire. We as Steeler nation look for any reason we can to get worked up about something, big or small. Sometimes we may even go too far, but when you represented the best NFL franchise in the history of the game, in the city of Pittsburgh, for 15 years, you should know better. Poor judgement Bill.

What Bill Cowher did was just plain garbage. We gave him 15 years of loyalty and support, win or lose, we stood by the guy. His behavior is a big screw-you, thumbing-my-nose at you to Steeler Nation. He's a turncoat, traitor, and I have absolutely ZERO RESPECT for the A-hole, period.

So you are forgetting about everything he did because he didn't root for the Pittsburgh Penguins during one playoff series?

Wow.

What a creep! Yes, everything the loser blogger, Bam Morris, said above is true. HOWEVER, Cowher didn't have to appear on national TV, DURING THE GAME, to bash his hometown. And he seemed to be really enjoying himself! What a creep! He must want to coach the Panthers pretty bad. I just hope the Panthers' owners saw Cowher's disgusting display last night and decided that a creep like Cowher will never coach the Panthers. Nauseating...

George, maybe you should try to make a coherent comment before calling Bam a "loser blogger" and making yourself look like an idiot. Cowher never bashed Pittsburgh once. He wasn't up there saying Pittsburgh sucked or burning a Terrible Towel or anything. He turned a siren. And what does that have anything to do with wanting to coach the Panthers? He lives in North Carolina, so that MUST mean he wants to coach the Panthers! What a creep!

Who cares if he wants to root for the Hurricanes or coach the Panthers.

It's not like he's under contract to remain within the city limits of Pittsburgh.

The guy gave a lot to the organization, his time is done. Let him do what he wants without saying he hates Pittsburgh.

Bill Cowher sucks. They need to rename the street in Crafton. Those of you defending him need to move to Newark.

Cowher made a serious error of judgement. Even if he is a canes fan he should have shown some restraint and used some tact. He is a native pittsburgher and a legend in pittsburgh, he can easily avoid doing petty things like turning a siren to preserve his status. With just one act he has jeopardised his whole career in the burgh. Bam keeps saying "who cares?". Answer: a lot of people i have talked to.

Chris,

That's the problem. Why is everybody getting so worked up over something even you called petty?

If Steeler fans really think this is worth hating him over, it's really a bad sign of who we are as fans.

Maybe Norm and I are in the minority, but there is no way turning a siren at a Carolina Hurricanes game is going to make Bill Cowher into a hated figure.

He is a legendary coach and we respect and admire him for his coaching, not who his favorite hockey team is three years after he left the Steelers.

Wow never knew this would be so crazy. This is probably why tons of people have a dislike for Steeler"s Nation. They call us arrogant and jerks. And some are proving the point. Look it hurt a bit to see an iconic man from the Steelers take part in Carolina's pre game, but he talked about his love of Pittsburgh through the years. So he is helping a losing team. Is the world going to end? I doubt it. In a few days it will be forgotten and life goes on. I lived in Minnesota and followed the Wild and was still a Penguins fan....does that make me a turn coat as well. It happened and it's done. Cowher has the right to choose who to cheer for just like Steeler's fans have the right to hate him for it. But this is not a world stopping issue. It stings, you move on.

I was origionally upset to see the Mighty Crafton Mandible behind a Carolina Siren. I soon realised that all it got him was props for a loosing team.
Once a Yinzer always a Yinzer. He will come around after he relises there is only one city of champions.

I say let him flirt with another team...from another city...in a completely different sport.

It's like being pissed at a Yinzer for drinking Nappa Valley wine instead of Iron City(while in california).
