Nobody knows if Randy Moss is *really* retired or not. I’m guessing he probably is. Brett Favre has made a joke out of retirements lately and everybody now seems to assume that “retired” means “waiting for the right situation. Plenty of players have quietly retired a la Moss shortly before the start of NFL training camp.
But there are at least some whispers that Moss is still privately weighing his options of playing in 2011. Moss would fill the same holes that Plaxico Burress would have: a big, veteran target in the redzone.
Certainly, he has had attitude problems throughout his career but I’m not concerned about that in the least. The Steelers are a veteran heavy team and if Moss or anybody else becomes too much of a distraction, then they are gone. It’s simple as that. If Moss decides he doesn’t want to show up and compete, the Steelers still have solid depth at WR. It’s not like the Patriots, Vikings or Titans, who needed Moss to be a 1 or 1a receiver on their team.
It’s also worth noting that the Steelers organization is run in the same vein as New England’s, a franchise that Moss is still in love with. With an elite QB in Ben Roethlisberger, a stable franchise and a team eyeing another deep playoff run, the Steelers would have to be on the short list of team’s Moss would consider.
Randy Moss is one of the greatest wide receivers ever to play the game and if I’m Kevin Colbert and Mike Tomlin, I’m at least calling his agent to see if there is any interest. The Steelers should think about kicking the tires a little bit, especially given their interest in Burress.
