The Steelers have trimmed their roster to 58 players today. Here are the cuts:
RB- James Johnson, John Clay
No real surprises here. Jonathan Dwyer’s performance solidified him as the 4th back on the roster and there’s no room for anyone else.
WR- Tyler Grisham, Wes Lyons, Armand Robinson
This might have been Grisham’s last shot. He’s been around for long enough to have made an impression and he really hasn’t. Wes Lyons hurts to lose though. I would hope the Steelers keep him around just because I wouldn’t want to give up on a receiver that BIG. You can’t coach size, but you can coach most of the other things that make a receiver good. No idea who Armand Robinson actually is.
TE- Jamie McCoy
Looks like Weslye Saunders has a good shot here. And with the lack of depth at TE (assuming David Johnson is still primarily a FB) this will be a big opportunity.
OL- John Malecki (C), Colin Miller (G), Keith Williams (G), Trevis Turner (T), Kyle Jolly (T)
It’s always difficult to judge an offensive lineman from his preseason play with different line combinations, so it’s hard to day whether or not these moves were coming. Sucks to lose out on former Pitt Panther John Malecki, but so it goes.
DL- Corbin Bryant
The end position looks pretty shored up with guys like Heyward and McLendon around. Hopefully these guys can help the starters stay fresher longer as they go into their older ages.
LB- Mario Harvey, Mortty Ivy, Chris McCoy, Baraka Atkins
Mortty Ivy surprises me; I thought he played well enough. I don’t know if the Steelers have any plans for his future, but I don’t want to give up on him yet.
DB- Macho Harris, Donovan Warren, Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith, Brett Greenwood
Ditto above for DMCS and Donovan Warren. I liked those guys, but there are a slew of other DBs still hanging around. It’s a crowded position.
K- Swayze Waters
Yawn.
Interesting that the Steelers cut a few of the guys the did, and yet both Kapinos and Sepulveda survived the first cuts.
Five more guys have to go before Pitt kicks off at 6PM (by the way, happy college football season everyone!). Will Sepulveda’s pedigree as a draft pick win him the punting job? Or will his chronic knee injuries finally be his undoing? Will another corner or two be lost? Stay tuned.
