Steelers select Marcus Gilbert and Curtis Brown

The Steelers answered calls to fortify the offensive line by taking a big lineman from a successful program. Presenting: Marcus Gilbert, former Florida Gator (and teammate of Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey). Flozell Adams is being held together with staples and Elmer’s glue and Willie Colon’s future is uncertain with the unresolved CBA. Here’s a talented lineman who will ideally sit for a year behind Adams ot Colon or Trai Essex or whoever and hopefully become a bookend on the line for years to come. Between Gilbert and Pouncey, the Steelers look like they’re committed to rebuilding the line with top-end talent.

Curtis Brown is the latest middle-round defensive back to join the Steelers, joining the likes of Keenan Lewis, Joe Burnett, Crezdon Butler, etc. The Steelers’ pass defense was putrid by Pittsburgh’s standards, but Colbert & company didn’t see a DB they though was worth their pick until the third round. Curtis Brown will spend training camp competing with guys like Lewis and Butler (and maybe even Anthony Madison) for the nickel spot in the defense.

The Steelers spent the day drafting by positions they need help with. The mantra has always been “best player available” but today the Steelers did what they needed to do in the draft: Build the offensive line and address their horrid pass defense.
