Practice Squad; Captains Named

The Steelers named their team captains today. On offense: Hines Ward and Heath Miller (WOOOOO HEEEEAAAAATH), on defense: James Farrior, and on special teams: Keyaron Fox.

Notice any quarterbacks missing? I think that’s a good message for the team to send. Ben is still the on-field leader, but he is no longer designated as such. Instead, someone finally shows Heath Miller some love and names him a captain. I could not be happier with this move. Another notable disappearance: Jeff Reed. All that bitching about a multimillion dollar deal to kick a football not being good enough for him, and the team acknowledges that maybe he just isn’t the leader they’d like him to be. Maybe the Steelers are going to phase Reed and his alcohol problems out? Or maybe I’m reading too much into taking a patch off a kicker’s jersey.

In today’s article: The Steelers’ practice squad and a few big signings.

Today all the roster cuts have cleared waivers and teams have set their practice squads. The Steelers’s practice squad:

  • TE Eugene Bright
  • OG Dorian Brooks
  • S Da’Mon Cromartie-Smith
  • WR Tyler Grisham
  • OT Kyle Jolly
  • DT Steve McLendon
  • FB Frank Summers
  • DE Doug Worthington

As far as other signings go, Stefan Logan was grabbed by the Lions. So maybe he won’t return a kick against the Steelers since they won’t play him for another 3 years. Matt Leinart signed on with the Houston Texans. I don’t get that move. Leinart was pissy because he didn’t play well enough to start and, as far as I know, blamed the coaching staff for not getting along with him. No one hates on the Whizard of AZ as long as I’m around. Enjoy being a backup on another team in the southwest that is almost never competitive.

In bad news, TJ Houshmandzadeh found a new home. A home in Baltimore. Prepare for the Ravens to win the AFC North. They are too talented and well-coached across the board not to. How depressing.

Ex-Pitt Panther Darelle Revis also ended his holdout last night after agreeing to a four-year contract. That was a big deal for the Jets to get out of the way. Now they can go on and be scary up until they lose on wildcard weekend.

Kickoff Thursday. Go Steelers.
