Trading Roethlisberger would be a mistake

Here’s the first article from our new writer – Michael Troy. He’s a long time Steeler fans and thinks the Steelers dealing Big Ben before, during or after this weekend’s draft would be a big time mistake.  – Bam

I hope the rumors about the Steelers trading Ben Roethlisberger are false.  There is no way they could ever find anyone to give up what he is really worth.  Right before the 2009 draft the Denver Broncos traded Jay Cutler to the Bears for 2 1st round picks and a 3rd round pick.  He threw 26 interceptions last year.

Ben wins games and can make things happen with a poor offensive line.  He is a damn good player, but has questionable character.  Pittsburgh fans will forgive him after he throws his first touchdown and he deserves a chance to change his ways before he is cast off for some draft picks. Some rumors are floating that he will be traded to the Rams for the 1st overall pick.

How does this help the Steelers?  They are now without a Super Bowl winning quarterback and have a college QB with recent shoulder surgery that they just gave $42 million in guaranteed money, who may never take a snap. Most of the team’s current core could be old or retired by the team a newly drafted QB was capable of a deep playoff run.

Next year, if Ben keeps his nose clean, this situation will have blown over.  It will blow over even faster if he starts playing well and the Steelers get off to a fast start.  Ben Roethlisberger committed the crimes — Big Ben, the football player did not — and it’s not tough for fans to make the distinction.
