Before anyone posts something bad, the loss I am talking about is not the loss to Green Bay… that I am still angry about. My question refers to the loss of Defensive Backs coach Ray Horton, who is heading to Arizona to take over as their Defensive Coordinator and turn the Cardinals into a 3-4 Defense. Interesting side note: Former Steelers cornerback Deshea Townsend will be his new DB Coach in Arizona.
I don’t think this is a bad thing at all. In my opinion, the Defensive Back position is where the Steelers needed a change most. It just seems to always be the one area where the Steelers suffer…we can’t stop the pass. I know we ranked 12th defending the pass and we have Troy Polamalu who Horton did help develop into the 2010 Defensive MVP, but having only one good playmaker in the secondary isn’t enough in this pass happy league, and 12th shouldn’t be good enough for the Steelers. Maybe it’s just me, but every big loss I can remember has been due to our inability to stop the pass, and not only that but the inability to adjust after a team does pass all over us. There were just too many times where the aggressiveness of the secondary was the reason for not coming up with the big play. Ray Horton, in my opinion, groomed all his DB’s to be too aggressive. A few players excelled with the coaching…but most seemed to stay stagnant or flounder. A shake up may be just what the Steelers need to make a stronger more rounded secondary.
