Steelers Hire Mike Munchak

Mike Munchak is the new offensive line coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In addition to having a name that sounds like a Pokemon, Munchak is an accomplished offensive linemen, spending 32 straight years in the Oilers/Titans organization before being fired as their head coach this past season. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Look, I don't know anything about Munchak. I don't know anything about offensive lines. None of us do. But I'm a believer that you don't hurt your team by bringing in established guys with head coaching experience to fill out your staff. The Baltimore Ravens scooped up guys like Cam Cameron and Jim Zorn when they flopped as head coaches, and don't look now but the Steelers have Dick LeBeau, Todd Haley, and now Mike Munchak as former head coaches on staff.

The Steelers' offensive line had been improving over the course of 2013, but management felt like they could do better with a more prominent coach (and given the draft pedigree all over the line, they should be right). Munchak will be that guy, at least as he bides his time waiting for another head coaching position (except Cleveland's) to open up.

It's time to see this allegedly talented offensive line pay some dividends. Hopefully Munchak is the guy who can make them take the next step.
